According to a report published in August 2024, a French NGO identified six types of plastic in soft drinks bottled in plastic from two major soft drinks brands.
The organization Agir pour l'environnment (Action for the Environment) relied on two laboratories to conduct a study on the survival of nano- and microplastic particles when the bottle was opened once, 10 or 20 times to simulate real-life use.
The report included an analysis of plastics with six different polymers identified.
The association called the results "surprising" given that "manufacturers only declared two types of polymers that come into contact with the beverage: [polyethylene] PE for the cap and PET for the bottle," according to the organization's statement.

After opening the bottle for the first time, people found 4 and 4.6 microplastic particles in one liter of soft drinks from 2 brands, respectively.
After opening the bottle 20 times, people determined that this number had increased from 10-13 times compared to the amount of microplastic found in the soft drink when the bottle was first opened.
The authors of the study said that it is possible that the plastic cap decomposes, leading to more particles when the bottle is opened more times.
All of the identified microplastic particles were smaller than 500 micrometers (µm) and the majority were smaller than 100 µm. Most of the particles associated with the pores were smaller than 50 µm.
A “large amount” of nanoparticles were also found in both soft drinks.
Their irregularly contoured shape “favors their interaction with other particles, combining the effects of some polymers,” the report said, adding that it also facilitates their contact with human cells.
39,000 to 52,000 microplastic particles consumed per year
Previous studies have estimated the annual intake of microplastic particles from food sources to be between 39,000 and 52,000 particles per person per year.
However, this figure rises to 74,000 to 121,000 particles consumed per person per year when inhalation is included.
A study published in January 2024 found hundreds of thousands of tiny pieces of plastic in plastic water bottles, a much higher number than previously reported.
Although the potential consequences of exposure to microplastics on human health are still being studied, concerns about their impact are growing.
Use a water filter at home and drink from ceramic or glass cups to limit microplastic particles entering the body
